To visualise the beating heart and vasculature of a 72-hour-old chick embryo, ink is injected into its yolk sac artery with a finely drawn glass capillary needle. A window is cut into an egg to expose the embryo, and then the embryo is placed under a stereo microscope.

The result? A beating heart! And a complex vascular system, of course.
